How to get a Qatar ID (QID) in 2026: steps, fees and renewal guide

How to get, renew and check your Qatar ID (QID) in 2026

If you live, work or study in Qatar, your Qatar ID (QID) is the single most important card in your wallet. It is your legal proof of residency. Without it, you cannot open a bank account, access healthcare, drive, travel in or out of Qatar, or do almost anything official. Whether you just landed in Doha and are waiting for your first QID, or your existing one is about to expire, this guide covers everything you need to know in simple, plain language.

What is a Qatar ID (QID)?

A Qatar ID, also called a QID or Iqama, is an official identity card issued by the Ministry of Interior (MOI) Qatar. It is issued to every resident of Qatar, including expatriate workers, family members, domestic workers, students and Qatari citizens.

The card carries your full name, photo, date of birth, nationality, 11-digit unique QID number, expiry date and sponsor information (for expats). Think of it as your all-in-one Doha life pass.

You need your QID to:

  • Open or use a bank account
  • See a doctor (public or private hospital)
  • Get a driving license
  • Travel out of Qatar and re-enter
  • Sign a rental contract
  • Apply for any government service

Understanding your 11-digit QID number

Your QID number is not random. It tells a small story about you:

DigitsWhat it means
1st digitCentury of birth: 2 = born 1900-1999, 3 = born 2000 onwards
2nd and 3rd digitsLast two digits of your birth year (e.g. 89 = born in 1989)
4th, 5th and 6th digitsYour nationality ISO code (India = 356, Pakistan = 586, Philippines = 608)
Last 5 digitsUnique sequence number assigned by MOI

So if your QID starts with 285, it means you were born in the 1900s, in 1985, and you hold the nationality with ISO code 563.

How to get a Qatar ID for the first time (new expats)

If you have just arrived in Qatar on a work visa, family visa or student visa, here is exactly what happens, step by step. The process officially begins only after you enter Qatar on a valid visa.

Step 1: Medical examination

Within the first few days of arrival, you must complete a mandatory health screening at a government-approved medical center. This includes a general health check-up, blood tests for infectious diseases (HIV, Hepatitis B and C), and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis. The medical examination costs approximately QAR 100, and results are processed within 2 to 4 business days.

Step 2: Fingerprinting (biometrics)

After the medical is cleared, you must register your fingerprints at the Criminal Evidence and Investigation Department (CEID). This step can sometimes cause delays due to high demand. Your fingerprint data is stored permanently in MOI’s system and is linked to your QID for life.

Do not skip or delay this step. Without completing fingerprint registration, your QID application will not be processed, no matter how many other documents you have ready.

Step 3: Document submission by your sponsor

Once your medical exam and fingerprinting are complete, your sponsor submits your visa, passport, photo, blood group certificate and fee to the Ministry of Interior. For most expat workers, the employer (PRO) handles this step on your behalf.

Step 4: Wait for your QID to be issued

In most cases, QIDs are issued within three weeks of submission. Processing time is extended when documents are missing. You can check your status online at any point (see below).

Step 5: Collect your QID

Your card is either collected from the designated MOI service center or delivered to your employer. You can also opt for QPost home delivery for an additional QAR 20.

How to renew your Qatar ID in 2026

In 2026, residents can renew their Qatar ID up to 3 months before expiry and must have a passport valid for at least 6 months at the time of renewal. Start early. Do not wait until the last week.

Important rule for sponsored workers: If you are on a sponsored visa, only your employer or their authorized PRO can renew your QID. You cannot renew it yourself. This is a strict rule in Qatar’s system.

Option 1: Renew online via MOI portal

  1. Go to portal.moi.gov.qa
  2. Sign in with your QID and password
  3. Go to MOI Services, then Residential Permit Inquiry
  4. Select RP Renewal and enter your QID number
  5. Choose the renewal period (1, 2 or 3 years)
  6. Pay online by debit or credit card
  7. Select delivery method (self-pickup or QPost)

Option 2: Renew via Metrash app

  1. Open the Metrash app and log in
  2. Tap “Residency,” then “Residency Renewal”
  3. Choose Personal or Company renewal
  4. Select the QID(s) to renew (up to 5 personal, up to 20 for companies)
  5. Choose renewal period and pay online
  6. Select QPost home delivery (QAR 20 delivery fee) or self-pickup
  7. QPost usually contacts you within 2 working days to arrange delivery

Option 3: Renew in person at an MOI service center

Bring your original QID, passport copy, passport-sized photos and sponsor letter. Visit between 7:00 AM and 12:30 PM, Sunday to Thursday. In-person renewals may take up to 7 to 10 working days. Qatar Navigate

Family members (spouse and children)QAR 500QAR 1,200
Domestic workers (drivers, maids)QAR 300QAR 720

Pro tip: Three-year renewals offer a 20% discount on the total fee. If your employer is renewing for you and your residency is stable, ask them to do a 3-year renewal to save money.

What happens if your Qatar ID expires?

Do not panic, but do not delay either.

The Ministry of Interior offers a 90-day grace period after your QID expires. During this period, you can renew without facing daily fines. After 90 days, a penalty of QAR 10 per day kicks in.

Once fines reach the QAR 6,000 maximum, no additional daily charges occur, but legal consequences can still include visa complications and service restrictions.

An expired QID also means:

  • You cannot board a flight out of Qatar or re-enter the country
  • Your bank account may be frozen
  • You cannot access healthcare services normally
  • Your employer relationship could be affected

If you are outside Qatar when your QID expires, your sponsor can still renew it remotely via the Metrash app. Contact your employer as soon as you realize the situation.

How to report a lost Qatar ID in Qatar

If you lose your QID, report it immediately. Do not wait.

Via Metrash app: Go to Residency, then Lost/Damaged Cards, select Lost ID, and choose the affected QID. Pay the QAR 200 replacement fee online.

Via MOI portal: Go to E-Services, sign in, select Residency Services, then Replace Lost/Damaged ID Card. Provide your loss report number and other details, then pay the fee.

You can then choose QPost delivery or self-pickup for the replacement card.

Qatar ID for family members and special situations

Newborn babies: Parents have exactly 60 days from the date of birth to complete the child’s passport and obtain a Qatar ID. Failing to apply within this window results in a daily fine of QAR 10.

Residents over 60: Proof of comprehensive private health insurance is generally required. Seniors are typically given 1-year renewals only.

Changing employers: If you switch jobs while your QID is close to expiry, your new employer takes over the renewal responsibility. Your 11-digit QID number stays the same for life.

Outside Qatar for more than 6 months: If you stay outside Qatar for more than six months without a special permit, your residency may automatically expire even if the physical card is still valid. In this case, a return permit or a new entry process is required.

Frequently asked questions about Qatar ID (QID)

How long does it take to get a Qatar ID for the first time?

The full process usually takes 3 to 4 weeks after your medical exam and fingerprinting are complete, assuming all documents are submitted correctly by your sponsor.

Can I check my Qatar ID expiry date without the QID number?

Yes. On the MOI portal, you can check using your passport number and nationality instead of your QID number. This is useful for new arrivals who do not yet have their card.

What is the fine for an expired Qatar ID in 2026?

There is a 90-day grace period with no fine. After that, the penalty is QAR 10 per day, up to a maximum of QAR 6,000. After that cap is reached, you will still face legal and residency consequences.

Can I renew my Qatar ID myself if I am a sponsored worker?

No. If you are on a sponsored visa, only your employer or their authorized PRO can submit the renewal. You must coordinate with your company’s HR or PRO team.

How do I use the digital Qatar ID?

How much does it cost to replace a lost Qatar ID?

The replacement fee is QAR 200, paid online via the MOI portal or Metrash app. You also pay QAR 20 if you want QPost home delivery of the new card.

No. The old Metrash2 app has been discontinued. Download the updated Metrash app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store instead.

Average Salary in Qatar 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before You Move

0

Thinking about a move to Qatar, negotiating a job offer, or trying to figure out if the number on the table is actually fair? This is the guide you need. Qatar remains one of the highest-paying job markets in the world for expats, and the tax-free income structure makes it even more attractive on paper.

But the headline numbers can be misleading. Salaries in Qatar vary enormously depending on your industry, job title, experience level, nationality, and whether your package includes housing and transport allowances or not.

Here is a complete, updated breakdown of average salaries in Qatar for 2026, by role, sector, and experience level, so you can go into any conversation knowing exactly where you stand.

The Headline Numbers: Qatar Average Salary in 2026

The average gross monthly salary in Qatar as of early 2026 is around QAR 11,000 to QAR 12,000, approximately USD 3,000 to USD 3,300. However, this number masks a wide spread. Low earners make around QAR 7,000 per month, while high earners make closer to QAR 40,000. The median monthly income is approximately QAR 14,380, meaning half the workforce earns above this figure and half earns below it.

The minimum wage in Qatar in 2026 is QAR 1,000 per month as a basic wage. Employers are also required to allocate QAR 500 per month for accommodation and QAR 300 for food unless already provided, making the minimum total monthly package QAR 1,800.

Key context: Qatar charges zero personal income tax. Every riyal you earn is yours to keep, which meaningfully changes how Qatar salaries compare to equivalent roles in the UK, US, or Europe.

What a Qatar Salary Package Actually Includes

The base salary is only part of the story in Qatar. Most professional expat packages include a combination of allowances that can add QAR 3,000 to QAR 10,000 per month of value on top of your stated salary. Always look at the full package, not just the basic figure.

Standard allowances in Qatar expat packages:

  • Housing allowance: QAR 2,500 to QAR 8,000+ per month, or employer-provided accommodation
  • Transport allowance: QAR 800 to QAR 2,000 per month, or company vehicle
  • Medical insurance: Usually fully covered by the employer
  • Annual return flights: One or two economy flights home per year
  • Education allowance: For dependents, typically QAR 15,000 to QAR 40,000 per child per year in senior packages
  • End-of-service gratuity: One month’s basic salary per year of service, paid on departure

A person earning QAR 12,000 in basic salary with free accommodation and transport effectively has a package worth QAR 16,000 to QAR 18,000 per month. Always calculate total package value, not just the headline salary.

What Is a Good Salary in Qatar in 2026?

A monthly salary of around QAR 12,000 to QAR 20,000 is generally sufficient for a comfortable lifestyle in Qatar. Around QAR 15,000 can work well for a single person with planned spending, while families typically need more due to larger housing and schooling costs.

Here is a practical breakdown:

LifestyleEstimated Monthly CostMinimum Salary Needed

The Highest Paying Jobs in Qatar 2026

Oil and gas engineers, pilots, senior managers, doctors, and IT specialists earn the highest salaries in Qatar. Based on current market data, these are the top-earning roles:

  1. CEO and General Manager: QAR 35,000 to QAR 80,000+
  2. Oil and Gas Engineer: QAR 20,000 to QAR 45,000
  3. Surgeon / Specialist Doctor: QAR 24,000 to QAR 35,000
  4. Pilot (Qatar Airways and others): QAR 25,000 to QAR 45,000
  5. CFO / Finance Director: QAR 30,000 to QAR 60,000
  6. IT Director: QAR 28,000 to QAR 50,000
  7. Chartered Accountant / Financial Controller: QAR 20,000 to QAR 30,000
  8. Senior Project Manager: QAR 22,000 to QAR 40,000
  9. Renewable Energy Engineer: QAR 18,000 to QAR 28,000
  10. Cybersecurity Specialist: QAR 15,000 to QAR 25,000

Key Factors That Affect Your Salary in Qatar

Company type matters a lot. Government and semi-government companies often offer better salary packages and benefits compared to small private companies.

Qualifications and certifications add real value. Professional certifications in engineering, finance, or IT reliably move salaries upward, especially in an environment where credentials are verified carefully.

Benefits can matter more than base salary. A package with free housing and transport at a lower base often beats a higher salary where you are paying rent and commuting costs yourself.

Nationality plays a role. Nationals from Europe, North America, and Australia are typically employed in professional roles and earn many times more than low-wage earners, often receiving generous compensation packages that include housing, relocation, and education benefits.

Negotiation is expected. Qatar’s job market, especially for professional expat roles, is built on negotiation. Research the range, know your total package value, and do not accept the first number without a conversation.

What Is Muharram in Islam? The Islamic New Year Explained Simply

Every year, when the crescent moon rises to mark the start of a new lunar cycle, more than a billion Muslims around the world welcome a month unlike any other. That month is Muharram, and for many in Qatar and across the globe, it carries a quiet but very real weight.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. Its name comes from the Arabic root meaning “forbidden” or “sanctified.” This is not just a label. In Islam, Muharram is one of four sacred months explicitly mentioned in the Quran, alongside Dhul-Qadah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Rajab. The Quran states in Surah At-Taubah (9:36): “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve lunar months… of these, four are sacred.”

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also described its spiritual weight in a hadith recorded in An-Nasai: “The best fasting after the month of Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah, Al-Muharram.”

In simple terms, Muharram is a time for Muslims to slow down, reflect, and renew their connection with their faith. It is not a month of loud celebrations. It is a month of prayer, gratitude, voluntary fasting, and remembrance.

When Is Muharram 2026 in Qatar?

1st Muharram 2026 (Islamic New Year 1448 AH) is expected to fall on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 in Qatar.

This date is based on astronomical lunar calculations. As with all Islamic months, the official confirmation depends on the physical sighting of the crescent moon, which is announced by Qatar’s moon-sighting committee. The date may shift by one day based on that announcement.

Here are the key dates to note for Muharram 2026 in Qatar:

DateMuharram DaySignificance
June 16, 2026 (expected)1 MuharramIslamic New Year 1448 AH
June 24, 2026 (expected)9 MuharramRecommended fasting day (Tasu’a)
June 25-26, 2026 (expected)10 MuharramAshura, the most significant day of the month

All dates are subject to moon sighting confirmation.

The Islamic New Year: What It Means and Why It Matters

The Islamic New Year, also called 1 Muharram or Ras al-Sanah al-Hijriyya, marks the start of the Hijri calendar year. In 2026, Muslims around the world will begin the year 1448 AH (Anno Hegirae), meaning 1,448 lunar years since the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Makkah to Madinah.

Unlike the Gregorian New Year, the Islamic New Year is not marked by fireworks, parties, or countdowns. It is observed with quiet reflection, increased prayer, and, for many, voluntary fasting. Muslims are encouraged to review their deeds from the past year and set sincere spiritual intentions for the year ahead.

Think of it as a personal reset, one that is deeply private and deeply meaningful.

What Is Ashura and Why Is It So Important?

Within the month of Muharram, the single most significant day is the 10th, known as the Day of Ashura. In Arabic, “Ashura” simply means “ten.”

In 2026, Ashura is expected to fall on June 25 or 26, depending on the moon sighting in Qatar.

This day holds profound meaning for Muslims across the world, though it is observed differently by different communities.

For Sunni Muslims: The Day Prophet Musa Was Saved

According to authentic hadith, when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah and observed the Jewish community fasting, he asked about their practice. He was told that they fasted on this day to commemorate the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh by miraculously parting the Red Sea.

The Prophet responded that Muslims have more right to Prophet Musa than others do, and he began fasting on Ashura and encouraged his companions to do the same. Sunni Muslims observe Ashura primarily through fasting, as an expression of gratitude to Allah for this act of divine mercy.

For Shia Muslims: The Martyrdom of Imam Hussain

On 10 Muharram 61 AH (October 680 CE), one of the most tragic events in Islamic history took place at Karbala in present-day Iraq. Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, was martyred alongside 72 family members and companions by the forces of Yazid ibn Muawiyah, the Umayyad Caliph at the time.

Imam Hussain had refused to pledge allegiance to a ruler he believed to be unjust. Rather than compromise on principle, he stood firm. He and his small group, surrounded and outnumbered, were killed on the plains of Karbala. For Shia Muslims, the Day of Ashura is a day of deep mourning and remembrance of this sacrifice.

The Prophet’s connection to Imam Hussain is captured in a widely cited hadith: “Al-Husayn is from me and I am from Al-Husayn. Whoever loves Al-Husayn, Allah loves him.”

While both communities observe Ashura with sincerity, their practices differ. Sunni Muslims fast. Shia Muslims hold mourning gatherings and commemorations. Both approach the day with reverence.

Fasting on Ashura: The Rules and the Rewards

Fasting during Muharram, and especially on Ashura, is one of the most recommended voluntary acts of worship in Islam.

In a hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked about fasting on the day of Ashura. He said: “Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.”

This is a remarkable reward. A single day of voluntary fasting, offered sincerely, can be a means of forgiveness for the minor sins of an entire year.

Scholars have outlined three valid approaches to fasting Ashura, all of which are considered acceptable:

  1. Fasting on the 9th, 10th, and 11th of Muharram (three consecutive days) — this is the most comprehensive approach
  2. Fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram — this is the most widely recommended
  3. Fasting on the 10th of Muharram only — this is valid, though scholars encourage adding the 9th to distinguish the Islamic practice

Qatar’s Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs officially encouraged all Muslims in the country to observe the fast of Ashura, noting the virtue of fasting as a means of expiating the sins of the previous year.

The fast of Ashura begins at the Fajr (dawn) prayer and ends at Maghrib (sunset), just like any voluntary fast in Islam.

Muharram in Qatar: How the Month Is Observed in Doha

Qatar is home to a large and diverse Muslim community, made up of Qatari nationals and millions of expatriates from South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Arab world, and beyond. For all of them, Muharram is a month of personal devotion.

Here is how the month is typically observed across Doha and the wider country.

A Quieter Public Atmosphere

During Muharram, and especially in the days leading up to and following Ashura, the public atmosphere in Qatar is generally more subdued. Loud entertainment, late-night gatherings, and festive public events are toned down out of respect for the sacred month. This is not enforced by law in the same way as Ramadan restrictions, but it is a cultural norm that residents and visitors are expected to be mindful of.

Private Community Gatherings

Mosques across Doha hold special religious lectures and gatherings during Muharram. Community organizations, cultural centers, and religious institutions host events focused on the history and lessons of Karbala, as well as the broader spiritual meaning of the month. These are typically private, community-led gatherings.

Charity and Giving

One of the key virtues encouraged during Muharram is giving to those in need. Many Muslim families and organizations in Qatar take the month as an opportunity to donate to charity, sponsor meals, or contribute to community causes.

Government Sector Holiday

Muharram is recognized as a public holiday in Qatar. The Islamic New Year typically results in a day off for government employees and, in many cases, private sector workers as well. For 2026, the holiday is expected to create a long weekend around June 16 to 17. Always confirm with your employer or the official government announcement closer to the date.

A Guide for Expats and Visitors in Doha During Muharram

If you are living in Doha as an expatriate, or visiting Qatar during the month of Muharram, here is what you should know.

Respect the atmosphere. While Qatar does not impose Ramadan-style public fasting restrictions during Muharram, the month is considered sacred. Loud or festive behavior, especially around the time of Ashura, is considered culturally insensitive.

Dress modestly. This applies year-round in Qatar, but it is particularly worth being mindful of during Muharram. Modest dress shows respect for local customs and the spirit of the month.

Restaurants and shops stay open. Unlike Ramadan, Muharram does not come with general restrictions on eating or drinking in public during daylight hours. Businesses operate normally.

Public mourning rituals are limited. Qatar does not permit large public mourning processions. Private gatherings within communities are observed, but the country maintains a respectful and peaceful public space for all.

If you are invited to a gathering, attend with openness. Being invited to a religious lecture or community event during Muharram is a gesture of inclusion. Attending respectfully is always appreciated by your hosts.

Muharram and the Hijri Calendar: A Quick Explainer

Many people in Qatar, particularly those new to the country, are unfamiliar with how the Islamic Hijri calendar works. Here is a simple breakdown.

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar. It follows the phases of the moon rather than the position of the sun. As a result, it has 354 to 355 days in a year, roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar we use for everyday life.

This is why Islamic events like Muharram, Ramadan, and Eid shift earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar. In 2026, Muharram begins on June 16. By 2030, it will begin around mid-May.

The calendar consists of 12 months: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul-Qadah, and Dhul-Hijjah.

Muharram is always the first. It is the beginning of the Islamic year, and it sets the tone for the 11 months that follow.

Muharram Greetings: What to Say and What to Avoid

Many people wonder whether it is appropriate to say “Happy Muharram” or “Happy Islamic New Year” to Muslim friends and colleagues in Qatar.

This is a nuanced question. While the new Islamic year is a moment of reflection and gratitude, Muharram also carries the grief of Ashura, particularly for Shia Muslims. Because of this, some scholars and communities prefer not to use the word “happy” in connection with the month.

A widely accepted and respectful greeting is: “May Allah make this year a blessed one for you” or in Arabic, “Aam Jadeed Mubarak” (which loosely means “Blessed New Year”).

For those from Shia communities, offering condolences or quiet acknowledgment of Ashura is more appropriate than a celebratory greeting.

When in doubt, keeping it simple and sincere is always the right approach.

Frequently Asked Questions About Muharram in Qatar

What is the date of Muharram 2026 in Qatar?

Muharram 2026 is expected to begin on June 16, 2026 in Qatar, marking the start of the Islamic New Year 1448 AH. The exact date depends on the moon sighting announced by Qatar’s crescent sighting committee.

What date is Ashura in Qatar in 2026?

Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, is expected to fall on June 25 or 26, 2026 in Qatar. The confirmed date will be announced after the moon sighting.

Is Ashura a public holiday in Qatar?

Yes. The Islamic New Year (1 Muharram) is recognized as a public holiday in Qatar. Government offices and many private sector companies observe a day off. Check with your employer for specific holiday arrangements.

Can you eat in public during Muharram in Qatar?

Yes. Unlike Ramadan, Muharram does not come with restrictions on eating or drinking in public during the day. Restaurants operate normally, though residents are encouraged to be respectful of the sacred atmosphere of the month.

What are the fasting days during Muharram?

The most significant fasting days are the 9th and 10th of Muharram (Tasu’a and Ashura). Scholars recommend fasting both days together, with some also fasting the 11th. Fasting on the day of Ashura alone is also valid and is said to expiate the minor sins of the previous year.

How is Muharram different from Ramadan?

Ramadan is an obligatory month of fasting for all adult Muslims and comes with specific public restrictions in Qatar. Muharram fasting is voluntary. The month has a different character, one of quiet reflection and historical remembrance rather than the communal energy of Ramadan.

When is Muharram 10 in Qatar?

What is the significance of fasting on Muharram 9th and 10th?

Fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). According to a hadith in Sahih Muslim, fasting on Ashura (10th Muharram) expiates the sins of the previous year. Adding the 9th is recommended to distinguish the Muslim practice from others who also fasted on the 10th.

Muharram is a month that asks something quiet of you. It does not demand festivity. It asks for reflection, sincerity, and a willingness to sit with history and let it teach you something.

For the many different communities that call Qatar home, whether you are a Qatari family marking the New Islamic Year in prayer, a South Asian expat planning your fasting days, or a non-Muslim resident simply looking to understand what your neighbours and colleagues are observing, Muharram is worth understanding. Not just because it affects the rhythm of daily life in Doha, but because the stories it carries are genuinely worth knowing.

The sacrifice of Imam Hussain. The mercy shown to Musa. The wisdom of beginning a new year not with noise but with remembrance.

These are stories that belong to all of us, in one way or another.

From all of us at People & Qatar, we wish every Muslim in Qatar a blessed and meaningful month.

Qatar QID and Residence Permit Guide 2026: How to Get It, Renew It and What You Need

0

If you have just moved to Qatar, are about to, or are staring at an expiry date creeping up on you, this guide is for you. The Qatar ID, officially known as the QID, is not just a card in your wallet. It is the document that unlocks almost everything here, from opening a bank account and renting an apartment to accessing healthcare and signing contracts.

Here is the full, plain-English breakdown of how to get your Qatar residence permit and QID, how to renew it, what documents you need, how much it costs, and what happens if you miss the deadline.

What Is the Qatar QID?

The Qatar ID (QID) is an official identification card issued by the Ministry of Interior (MOI) to all foreign nationals legally residing in Qatar. It is tied to your Residence Permit (RP) and contains your personal details, employer or sponsor information, visa type, and expiry date, all linked to a unique 11-digit number.

Without a valid QID, you cannot open a bank account, rent a home, get a SIM card, apply for a driving license, or access most government services. It is the most important document you will carry as an expat in Qatar.

Types of Qatar Residence Permits

Qatar issues residence permits under several categories depending on your situation:

Work-sponsored RP: The most common type. Your employer acts as your sponsor and manages most of the process on your behalf.

Family-sponsored RP: If you are the spouse or dependent child of a Qatar resident, your sponsor (usually your partner or parent) applies on your behalf.

Investor or business RP: For business owners and investors registered in Qatar.

Golden Visa: A longer-term residency option for qualified investors, professionals, and talented individuals. No employer sponsor required.

What Documents Do You Need?

For a New Residence Permit (First-time applicants)

Your employer or sponsor will typically handle the submission, but you will need to provide:

  • Valid passport (with at least 6 months validity remaining)
  • Recent passport-sized photographs meeting MOI specifications
  • Employment contract, attested and valid
  • Medical fitness certificate from an approved health centre in Qatar
  • Professional certificates (attested, if required for your role)
  • Marriage certificate (for family-sponsored applications)

For Renewal

  • Current QID card
  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
  • Recent passport-sized photograph
  • Updated employment contract or sponsorship documents
  • Medical fitness certificate (if required by your job category)
  • Copy of your lease agreement or utility bill (proof of address, if required)

How to Get Your QID: Step by Step

Step 1: Medical Examination

Visit an MOI-approved health centre in Qatar for a medical fitness test. This typically covers a blood test and a chest X-ray. Results take one to three days.

Step 2: Biometric Data and Fingerprinting

Visit a Ministry of Interior service centre to submit your fingerprints and biometric data. This is usually a one-day step.

Step 3: Application Submission

Your employer or sponsor submits your documents through the MOI portal at portal.moi.gov.qa. For self-sponsored or investor categories, you can submit directly.

Step 4: Application Review and Approval

MOI reviews the complete application. This takes one to three weeks depending on document completeness and workload at the time.

Step 5: QID Issuance

Once approved, your QID is ready within one to seven days. You can choose home delivery via Q-Post (QAR 20 delivery fee) or collect it in person at an MOI service centre.

Total estimated time: Two to four weeks from start to finish.

How to Renew Your QID in Qatar 2026

Start your renewal at least 30 days before your QID expires. You can renew up to three months before the expiry date. The fastest and most convenient method is through the Metrash app.

Option 1: Metrash App (Recommended)

The Metrash app, available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, is the official MOI mobile service platform.

  1. Download and open the Metrash app
  2. Log in with your QID number and registered mobile number
  3. Go to “Residency Services” and select “Renew Residency”
  4. Choose renewal for yourself or a dependent
  5. Select your renewal period (1, 2, or 3 years)
  6. Upload any required documents
  7. Pay the renewal fee by credit or debit card
  8. Select your delivery option (home delivery or MOI collection)

Option 2: MOI Online Portal

Visit portal.moi.gov.qa, navigate to “E-Services”, select “Residency Services”, and follow the “Renew Residency” steps. The process mirrors the app.

Option 3: In-Person at an MOI Service Centre

Bring your current QID, passport, and any required documents to the nearest MOI service centre. Fill in the application form on-site, submit your documents, and pay the fees. Processing can be same-day or take a few days depending on the centre and the time of year.

For a cancelled QID, you also have a 90-day grace period. After that, the fine increases to QAR 100 per day.

Renew on time. The fines add up fast.

How to Check Your QID Status Online

You can track the status of your QID or residence permit application at any time through the MOI portal.

  1. Visit portal.moi.gov.qa

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Passport expiry: Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity when you apply or renew. If it is expired, the MOI system will not process your application.

Name mismatches: Your name must be identical across your passport, employment contract, and all submitted documents. Even a small spelling difference can delay the process.

Late renewal: Do not wait until the last week. Processing can take 7 to 14 working days, and delays happen during peak periods including Eid and summer.

Incomplete documents: Missing or unclear scans are the most common cause of delays. Scan documents clearly and save them as PDF files.

First-time Metrash users: If you are new to the Metrash app, register your mobile number at a telecom kiosk or MOI machine before logging in for the first time.

Eid Al-Adha celebrations and Torba Market attracted strong turnout offering a rich program for families and visitors

United Development Company (UDC) recently concluded a vibrant series of seasonal activations and community experiences across its master developments at The Pearl Island and Gewan Island, further reinforcing the destinations’ positioning as integrated waterfront environments centered around lifestyle, hospitality, entertainment, and community engagement.

The recent Eid Al-Adha celebrations, together with the introduction of Torba Market to Qanat Quartier, reflected UDC’s broader approach toward creating experience-led destinations that extend beyond residential living to offer dynamic social and cultural environments for residents and visitors alike.

Across Porto Arabia, Crystal Walk, and Qanat Quartier, families and visitors enjoyed a diverse mix of live entertainment, children’s activities, outdoor experiences, dining, shopping, and community-focused programming within distinctive waterfront settings that continue to define the character of the islands.

The Eid Al-Adha celebrations brought together residents and visitors over five days through a variety of family-oriented activities and entertainment at 29 La Croisette in Porto Arabia and Crystal Walk on Gewan Island. The festive atmosphere was complemented by the islands’ scenic promenades, hospitality offerings, and more than 500 retail outlets, restaurants, cafés, and lifestyle concepts spread across both destinations.

Further enriching the seasonal program, UDC also introduced the popular “Torba Market” to Qanat Quartier, transforming the canal-front district into a lively pedestrian-friendly open-air destination during Saturdays in May and throughout the Eid Al-Adha weekend, celebrating local entrepreneurship, artisanal products, sustainability, and community interaction. Set against Qanat Quartier’s Venetian-inspired architecture and waterfront charm, the market offered visitors an immersive lifestyle experience while supporting farmers, artisans, home-based businesses, and local entrepreneurs.

These activations form part of UDC’s continued focus on destination marketing aimed at strengthening the islands’ appeal as year-round lifestyle and tourism destinations. Through curated programming, seasonal events, and public realm activation, UDC continues to foster meaningful connections between people, culture, entertainment, and place.

The strong turnout witnessed throughout the recent activations reflects the growing appeal of The Pearl and Gewan Islands as premier visit-and-dwell destinations within a vibrant and integrated urban environment.

Building on this momentum, UDC is now gearing up for a summer season centered around leisurely entertainment, waterfront experiences, and beach-focused activities designed to enhance the much-anticipated summer break in Doha.

Qatar Summer Working Hours 2026: New Outdoor Work Restrictions Now in Effect

0

The Ministry of Labour has announced the implementation of summer heat protection measures for workers across Qatar, effective from June 1 to September 15, 2026.

As part of efforts to ensure a safe working environment and protect workers from heat stress during the country’s hottest months, outdoor work in open areas will be prohibited daily from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The measure is being enforced under Ministerial Decision No. 17 of 2021, which outlines the necessary precautions to safeguard workers from heat-related illnesses and extreme weather conditions.

Key Details

  • Effective Period: June 1, 2026 to September 15, 2026
  • Restricted Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Applies To: Work carried out in open outdoor areas exposed to direct sunlight and high temperatures
  • Authority: Ministry of Labour, State of Qatar
  • Legal Basis: Ministerial Decision No. 17 of 2021

Why the Rule Matters

Qatar experiences extremely high temperatures during the summer months, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heat stroke among outdoor workers. The annual restriction is designed to reduce exposure to dangerous heat levels and improve workplace safety across sectors such as construction, infrastructure, and outdoor maintenance.

The Ministry of Labour has urged employers to comply with the regulations and ensure that workers are provided with adequate protection, hydration, and rest periods throughout the summer season.

The summer work ban remains one of Qatar’s key worker welfare measures and will remain in force until September 15, 2026.

From June 7, 2026, visa processing will return to the country’s approved procedures, including standard validity periods, renewal requirements, and applicable fees.

The Ministry clarified that all individuals holding entry visas must comply with the official regulations by renewing visas within the permitted period, paying required fees, or leaving the country before visa validity expires to avoid penalties or legal violations related to overstaying.

The latest Qatar immigration update affects all categories of entry visas and is expected to impact visitors, expatriates, and residents handling visa status changes across the country.

According to the Ministry of Interior statement:

“Starting from Sunday, June 7, 2026, work will resume according to approved procedures and guidelines for all types of entry visas, including specified validity periods and fees for each type.”

Blue Moon Qatar 2026 Full Guide (May 31): Timings, Where to Watch and Why It Is Not Actually Blue

A rare Blue Moon will light up Qatar’s skies on Sunday, May 31, 2026, giving skywatchers across Doha and beyond a chance to witness one of the year’s most talked-about astronomy events. If you are searching for the Blue Moon 2026 Qatar timing, wondering whether the moon will actually turn blue, or looking for the best places to watch in Doha, this complete guide covers everything.

The event is expected to draw attention from photographers, astronomy enthusiasts and families across Qatar, especially because this is the only Blue Moon of 2026 and also a rare micromoon.

What is the Blue Moon 2026?

Despite the dramatic name, the Blue Moon is not actually blue in colour.

A Blue Moon refers to the second full moon occurring within the same calendar month. Since the lunar cycle lasts around 29.5 days, this rare occurrence happens only every two to three years.

In May 2026, the first full moon appeared on May 1, known as the Flower Moon, while the second full moon arrives on May 31, officially making it a Blue Moon.

Interestingly, the 2026 Blue Moon is also a micromoon, meaning it occurs when the Moon is farther away from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it may appear slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon, although the difference is subtle to the naked eye.

Is the Blue Moon Actually Blue?

No, the Blue Moon will not appear blue in Qatar.

The name often confuses people, but in astronomy, “Blue Moon” is simply a calendar term.

In rare atmospheric conditions such as volcanic ash, desert dust, or wildfire smoke, the moon may sometimes appear bluish, but that is extremely uncommon and unrelated to the official Blue Moon event.

In Qatar, the moon is more likely to appear golden, amber or orange during moonrise, especially near the horizon before gradually turning bright white higher in the sky.

Blue Moon 2026 Qatar Timing

If you are planning to watch the Blue Moon in Doha or anywhere in Qatar, timing matters.

Key Blue Moon Timings in Qatar

Date: Sunday, May 31, 2026
Peak Full Moon Time: Around 11:45 AM Qatar time
Best Viewing Time: After sunset from around 6:39 PM onwards
Direction to Look: Eastern horizon

Although the moon technically reaches peak fullness during daytime in Qatar, it will not be visible at that moment. The best experience comes during moonrise in the evening, when the moon rises low over the skyline and appears larger due to the moon illusion effect.

For photography, experts recommend arriving 20 to 30 minutes before moonrise to secure a clear spot and compose skyline shots.

Late May in Qatar generally offers clear skies, making conditions favourable for moon watching. However, visibility can still be affected by dust or haze, especially near the coast.

Checking the weather forecast before heading out is recommended.

Qatar Cabinet May 2026: Everything You Need to Know About This Month’s Key Decisions

Qatar’s Cabinet had a busy May. Chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, the Council of Ministers met across several regular sessions this month and signed off on a set of decisions that touch daily life for residents, businesses, students, and the social sector alike.

Here is a clear breakdown of what was approved, what it means, and why it matters.

What the Minister Said

Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs HE Ibrahim bin Ali Al Mohannadi summarized the month’s direction:

“In May, the Cabinet approved a number of decisions and draft laws that underscore the State’s commitment to advancing social development, strengthening family cohesion, and empowering social professions and volunteer work as essential pillars of community engagement.”

The decisions reflect the joint efforts of Qatar’s legislative and executive authorities to push forward policies that support families, digital transformation, and the country’s social infrastructure in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

5 Decisions on Local Affairs

1. E-Invoicing Law

Qatar’s Cabinet approved a draft law on e-invoicing and its executive regulations on May 6, 2026. Prepared by the Ministry of Finance in coordination with the General Tax Authority, the law aims to establish a legal framework for e-invoices and related notices, enhance transparency, and support digital transformation, while creating reliable databases for oversight purposes.

For businesses operating in Qatar, this is one of the most practically significant moves of the month. The General Tax Authority will monitor compliance, improve data access, and align with international trends. Businesses will need to prepare for structured invoicing, increased audits, and compliance harmonisation across the GCC.

2. Regulation of Social Professions

The Cabinet approved a draft law regulating the practice of social professions, prepared by the Ministry of Social Development and Family, in line with the Third National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030. The law aims to establish an integrated legislative framework to regulate social professions by identifying controls, provisions and professional standards necessary for practicing them.

The law also supports the participation of the private sector and non-profit organisations in providing social services within a framework that ensures governance, transparency, and sustainability.

3. Regulation of Private Schools

The Cabinet approved a draft law regulating private schools, prepared by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, aimed at updating the legal framework governing private schools and enhancing governance and ensuring the quality of education.

This move is directly relevant to Qatar’s large expat community, where private schooling is the primary option for most families. The new framework is expected to raise accountability standards and improve the overall quality of private education across the country.

4. Water Reconciliation Deadline Extension

A draft decision by the Minister of State for Energy Affairs extends the reconciliation deadline stipulated in Law No. 23 of 2025 on Water. This gives relevant parties additional time to comply with water-related regulatory requirements, a step that aligns with Qatar’s broader sustainability and resource management agenda.

5. Health Research Licensing Fees

The Cabinet approved a draft decision by the Minister of Public Health specifying the fees applicable to licenses related to health research, within the framework of implementing Law No. 6 of 2025 on health research, with the aim of regulating the procedures for granting licenses in this field.

The Bigger Picture

Taken together, this month’s Cabinet decisions point in a consistent direction: Qatar is building out its legal and institutional infrastructure across digital commerce, education, healthcare, and the social sector simultaneously.

The e-invoicing law alone will reshape how businesses report and manage transactions, bringing Qatar in line with GCC neighbours already further along in tax digitalisation. The private school law addresses one of the most frequently raised concerns among Qatar’s expat population. And the social professions law opens a clearer, more regulated pathway for NGOs, volunteers, and community organisations to operate.

All of these decisions align with the Third National Development Strategy 2024 to 2030 and Qatar National Vision 2030, both of which prioritise a knowledge-based, sustainable, and socially cohesive society.
