QCAA: Southern Iran’s earthquake poses no threat to Qatar. The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that the earthquake that struck southwestern Iran on Sunday does not represent any danger to the State of Qatar.
The Qatar Seismic Information Network recorded an earthquake measuring between 5.2 and 5.3 on the Richter scale in southern Iran on 1 February 2026. The earthquake occurred at 8:11:19 AM Doha time at a distance of approximately 263 kilometers northeast of Doha.
In an exclusive statement to Qatar News Agency, Head of the Qatar Seismic Network at the Meteorology Department of QCAA, Ibrahim Khalil Al Youssef, said the earthquake does not pose any threat to Qatar. He explained that the affected area is considered seismically active due to continuous tectonic movement between the Arabian Plate and the Eurasian Plate.
Al Youssef reassured citizens and residents of the State of Qatar that such earthquakes are expected in the region and do not impact national safety or infrastructure.
The Earthquake Event Notification issued by the Qatar Seismic Information Network was supported by clear geographic data highlighting the Arabian Gulf and the earthquake epicenter in southern Iran, showing its proximity to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. The information focused on public awareness and monitoring rather than emergency escalation, reinforcing that the event was moderate in magnitude and occurred outside Qatari territory.
Broader seismic data for January 2026 shows earthquake activity of magnitude 5.0 and above distributed across the world along known tectonic plate boundaries, including the Pacific Ring of Fire, the western coasts of the Americas, and parts of the Middle East and South Asia. This confirms that the earthquake in southern Iran aligns with normal global seismic patterns and does not indicate any unusual regional seismic escalation.
Qatar’s seismic authorities continue to closely monitor regional and global earthquake activity and provide transparent updates to ensure public awareness and reassurance.

Reinforcing its role as the first destination to bring global brands to Qatar, Doha Festival City has announced the first-to-market opening of Primark later in 2026, marking a major milestone in the country’s retail landscape.
Delivered in partnership with Alshaya Group, Primark’s Qatar debut underscores Doha Festival City’s long-standing role as Doha’s destination for coveted global trends, achieved through attracting internationally recognised brands and serving as the gateway of choice for retailers entering the Qatari market
The opening builds on Doha Festival City’s proven ability to convert brand demand into sustained footfall, loyalty and long-term value.
Primark will open its first and largest store in Qatar at Doha Festival City, spanning three levels, firmly positioning it as a key anchor within the mall’s fashion portfolio.
Founded in Ireland and operating hundreds of stores across Europe and the United States, Primark has recently expanded into the Middle East through its partnership with Alshaya Group, with Qatar marking a key next step in the brand’s regional growth.
Known globally for accessible, trend-driven fashion across women’s, men’s, kids’ and home departments, Primark is expected to attract families, youth and value-seeking shoppers, supporting longer dwell time and cross-shopping across the destination while meeting everyday wardrobe and family shopping needs.

With shoppers visiting weekly and spending up to three hours per visit, Doha Festival City offers the scale and performance required for high-impact first-to-market launches of this significance.
