Qatar has revealed Suhail as the official mascot of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, bringing a special touch of Qatari heritage to one of the biggest basketball tournaments in the world.

The tournament will take place in Doha from 27 August to 12 September 2027, bringing together 32 national teams. It will be the first FIBA Basketball World Cup hosted in the Middle East.

Who Is Suhail, the FIBA World Cup 2027 Mascot?

Suhail is inspired by the bright Suhail star, also known as Canopus. For centuries, sailors, desert travellers and pearl divers across Qatar and the Gulf used the star to help guide their journeys.

The star is also traditionally linked to the end of the peak summer heat and the arrival of more comfortable evenings. It is expected to be visible in Qatar during the tournament.

What Makes Suhail Special?

Designed with crystal-like surfaces and meteorite-inspired materials, Suhail represents the connection between the sky, the earth and Qatar’s cultural heritage. Its design brings together the history of the region and the excitement of international basketball.

According to the tournament’s organisers, the mascot will help connect with fans of all ages and encourage more young people to discover and play basketball.
