Every December, the skies over Qatar do something magical. Dozens of hot air balloons, many of them enormous special shapes from around the world, rise at sunrise over Doha, and at night the same balloons glow in perfect synchrony with music against the dark Qatar sky. What Happens at Qatar Balloon Festival
Sunrise Balloon Launches

Every morning, weather permitting, dozens of hot air balloons launch at sunrise over Qatar. There is something genuinely hard to describe about watching a field of enormous colourful balloons fill with air and rise slowly into a dawn sky. It is one of the most photographed moments in Qatar’s entire events calendar, and for good reason. Balloon launches happen across the full ten days of the festival.
Night Glow

The Night Glow is what brings people back every single year. As night falls, the balloons are tethered to the ground and inflated, then lit up in synchronised sequences to music, transforming into enormous glowing lanterns. The result is visually stunning in a way that photographs genuinely cannot fully capture. Every edition of QBF has featured Night Glows as the centrepiece of the evening programme, and QBF7 continues that tradition.
Family Activities and Playground

Beyond the balloons, the festival runs a full family entertainment programme including inflatable play areas, games, and dedicated children’s activity zones. It is a full-day-out kind of event where you arrive in the morning for the launches, stay through the afternoon for the activities, and stay into the night for the glow.
Kite-Building Workshops

One of the more hands-on additions at QBF7 is the kite-building workshop, where kids and families can learn to build and decorate their own kites, then fly them in designated areas on the festival grounds. It is a creative, interactive element that adds something beyond just watching.
Food and Shopping
Food stalls and shopping kiosks are spread across the festival grounds throughout the event. The food kiosk registration is currently open for vendors who want to participate.
By the Numbers: What the 6th Edition Looked Like
The previous edition of Qatar Balloon Festival set records that give a sense of the scale QBF7 is building on. The sixth edition featured 45 balloons, 35 of which were special shapes, making it the largest gathering of special-shape balloons ever hosted in Qatar. It brought in 116 overseas pilots and crew members from more than 15 countries, generating around 800 hotel room nights across the city. QBF7 is expected to go bigger across every one of these figures.

Why December Is the Best Time for Qatar Balloon Festival
December is genuinely the best month in Qatar for outdoor events. Temperatures sit comfortably in the mid-teens to low twenties Celsius, evenings are cool and clear, and the sky conditions are ideal for balloon launches. Combine that with Qatar National Day on December 18, which falls right inside the festival window, and you have ten days that capture Qatar at its most celebratory and most visited.
For anyone planning a trip to Qatar in 2026, the December 10 to 19 window is one of the strongest possible reasons to be in the country. Hotels will be busy, the city will be at its most energetic, and the National Day celebrations alongside the balloon festival create an atmosphere unlike any other time of year.
