Team Qatar has reached seven medals at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games after Bassem Hameida won gold in the men’s 400m hurdles and Zakaria Ibrahim secured bronze in the 3,000m steeplechase. Qatar’s medal tally now stands at three gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
The latest athletics results have added another major chapter to Qatar’s Asian Games 2026 campaign, with Hameida producing a winning time of 47.82 seconds and Ibrahim finishing third in 8:18.13.
The 20th Asian Games are being held across Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, and continue until October 4, 2026.
Bassem Hameida wins Qatar’s third gold medal
Bassem Hameida delivered one of Qatar’s biggest athletics moments of the Asian Games 2026, winning the men’s 400m hurdles final in 47.82 seconds.
Japan’s Taiju Goto finished second in 47.93 seconds, while Chinese Taipei’s Chung Wei-lin took bronze in 48.74 seconds.
Hameida had already won silver at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou. His victory in Japan means he has now moved from silver to gold in the event.
His gold medal is also Qatar’s third gold medal at Aichi-Nagoya 2026, following two golds won by Qatar’s shooting team.
Hameida said the medal was the result of years of work since the previous Asian Games and expressed his pride at raising the Qatari flag.
Zakaria Ibrahim wins bronze on Asian Games debut

Qatar’s Zakaria Ibrahim Al Ahlaami added another athletics medal by winning bronze in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.
The 22-year-old finished in 8:18.13, placing third behind Japan’s Ryuji Miura and Ryoma Aoki.
The result was particularly significant because it was Ibrahim’s first Asian Games appearance.
He was also the youngest athlete in the final.
Miura won gold in 8:17.36, while Aoki took silver in 8:17.60.

Qatar’s two earlier gold medals came from shooting.
The men’s skeet team of Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah, Rashid Saleh Al Athba and Ali Ahmed Al Ishaq won team gold, while Rashid Saleh Al Athba also won individual skeet gold and set a new Asian record with 34 points.
Qatar’s silver medals have come from men’s karate and 3×3 basketball, while the first bronze came from karate before Ibrahim added the second bronze in athletics.
Qatar 4x400m relay team reaches final

Qatar’s athletics campaign also continues in the men’s 4x400m relay.
The team of Ismail Dawood, Youssef Abdulaziz Jabrin, Samer Mousa Hassan and Mohamed Kala qualified for the final after finishing second in the heats in 3:01.71, their fastest time of the season.
Qatar also has athletes competing in other athletics finals, including the men’s pole vault and 800m.
Qatar handball team reaches Asian Games final

Away from athletics, Qatar’s men’s handball team booked its place in the Asian Games 2026 final after defeating South Korea 32-30 in the semi-final.
Qatar will face Bahrain in the final, with the team aiming for a fourth consecutive Asian Games gold medal.
The semi-final was closely fought, with the teams level 16-16 at half-time before Qatar produced a strong finish to secure the victory.
Bahrain reached the final after beating Japan 35-31.
Qatar volleyball team advances to second round

Qatar’s men’s volleyball team also continued its campaign with a 3-0 victory over Vietnam.
The set scores were:
- Qatar 25-23 Vietnam
- Qatar 28-26 Vietnam
- Qatar 25-19 Vietnam
The result secured Qatar’s place in the second round after victories over Hong Kong and Vietnam.
Qatar was then scheduled to face India in the final Group C match to determine the group’s top positions.
Qatar beach volleyball teams enter knockout stage

Qatar has two teams competing in the men’s beach volleyball Round of 16.
Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, representing Qatar 1, advanced after topping their group.
Qatar 2, featuring Moussa Al Khair and Mohamed Ehab, also reached the knockout stage.
Younousse and Tijan are two-time Asian Games champions, having won gold at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang and 2022 Hangzhou Games.
Qatar padel team falls to Kazakhstan
Qatar’s Mohamed Saadoun Al Kuwari and Hassan Wali lost their opening padel match to Kazakhstan 2-1.
Kazakhstan won the first set 7-5 before Qatar responded with a 6-2 second-set victory.
The deciding set went to a tiebreak, with Kazakhstan eventually winning 7-6.
Fares Ibrahim finishes seventh in weightlifting

Qatar’s Olympic weightlifting champion Fares Ibrahim finished seventh in the men’s 95kg category.
He recorded a combined total of 340kg, including:
- Snatch: 150kg
- Clean and jerk: 190kg
Iran’s Ali Pour won gold with 398kg, followed by Kazakhstan’s Nurgisa Adiletuly with 394kg and China’s Tu Yi with 384kg.
Qatar’s Wisal Yakhlaf was also scheduled to compete in the women’s 86kg category.
Qatar’s Asian Games campaign continues
With the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games continuing until October 4, Qatar remains involved across athletics, handball, volleyball, beach volleyball and other competitions.
The latest results have already given Team Qatar seven medals: three gold, two silver and two bronze, with more events still to come.
