Sheikh Joaan Nominated as OCA President for 2027-2035: 27 NOCs Back Qatar’s Sports Leader
H.E. Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani has been nominated for the position of President of the Olympic Council of Asia for the 2027 to 2035 term, with 27 of the OCA’s 45 member National Olympic Committees putting their support behind his candidacy.
The Olympic Council of Asia confirmed on June 30, 2026 that no other nomination was received before the deadline closed at 5 PM Kuwait time. Sheikh Joaan, who currently serves as OCA President, thanked the National Olympic Committees for their trust and confidence in his leadership.
The next OCA General Assembly, where the election is expected to be formalised, will be held in Doha, Qatar on January 27, 2027.
This development further cements Qatar’s growing role on the international sports stage. The country has hosted numerous major events in recent years and continues to expand its sporting footprint across the region.
